Small group cultural journey
About this Journey
Xishuangbanna feels unlike most parts of China.
Here, the tropical rainforest grows close to the city, the Lancang River flows south toward Southeast Asia as the Mekong River, and Dai, Jino and other local communities have shaped their daily lives around water, forests, tea, farming and seasonal rhythms.
This five-day route is designed to help you experience Xishuangbanna from the inside rather than simply move between tourist attractions.

You will begin in Jinghong, where night markets, Dai food and riverside life create the first introduction to the region. Then travel into the mountains to visit a Jino community, learn the basics of traditional tea-making and walk through the tropical rainforest with local outdoor guides.
The journey continues into Dai village life. You will visit Manzhang Village, try traditional Dai pottery, explore tropical fruit orchards and watch the famous peacock flight display in the forest park. In the evening, step into the rainforest after dark to look for insects, frogs, spiders and other small creatures that only appear when the forest changes at night.

You will also visit the Chinese Academy of Sciences Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, where tropical plants, giant water lilies, palms and rare species reveal the extraordinary biodiversity of southern Yunnan. The experience ends with water-splashing celebrations at Dai Ethnic Park and a final morning at Manting Park.

This is not a shopping tour or a rushed checklist itinerary. It is a small-group journey for travelers who want to taste, walk, learn, make, observe and understand the tropical culture of Xishuangbanna.
Itinerary
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Jinghong – Starlight Night Market
Xishuangbanna
Arrive in Jinghong and check in to your boutique city hotel.
Take time to rest, settle in and explore at your own pace.
In the evening, we recommend visiting Gaozhuang Xishuangjing, one of Jinghong’s most lively night areas. Walk around the Golden Pagoda, see the Lancang River and explore the Starlight Night Market.
Try local Dai-style snacks such as grilled barbecue, mashed chicken feet, paoluda and tropical drinks while enjoying Xishuangbanna’s relaxed night atmosphere.
Day 2: A Day with the Jino People – Tea Making & Rainforest Trek
Xishuangbanna
After breakfast, meet your guide at the hotel and drive towards a Jino mountain village.
The Jino people have a close relationship with tea-growing hills, forests and mountain life. During the visit, you will take part in a hands-on tea experience, including tea picking, pan-firing and traditional tea processing.
Tea pressing and packaging for personal takeaway can be arranged locally at your own expense.
After a Jino-style lunch, continue into the rainforest for a guided light trek. Discover tropical plants such as strangler figs, giant buttress roots, epiphytic orchids and other rainforest species.
Basic hiking equipment such as trekking poles and non-slip rain boots will be provided where needed. A rainforest swing experience may also be arranged depending on local conditions.
Return to Jinghong in the late afternoon.
Day 3: A Day with Dai Culture – Village Pottery, Peacocks & Night Insects
Xishuangbanna
After breakfast, depart for Manzhang Dai Village.
Spend the morning experiencing Dai village life through tropical fruit picking and traditional Dai pottery-making. The pottery experience includes clay and tools. Finished pieces may be shipped home at an additional cost.
Fruit-picking costs are not included and depend on seasonal availability.
After lunch, continue to Xishuangbanna Primitive Forest Park. Explore the park by sightseeing shuttle and visit Peacock Villa for the afternoon peacock flight display.
In the evening, join a guided night nature walk to observe the rainforest after dark. Depending on the season, you may see stick insects, orchid mantises, spiders, tree frogs and other nocturnal creatures.
If insect activity is low due to weather or season, the activity may be replaced with a riverside night market visit, a traditional medicinal plant garden visit or free time in Jinghong.
Day 4: Tropical Plants & Dai Water-Splashing Celebration
Xishuangbanna
Explore tropical plant collections with a local guide, including the giant water lily pond, palm garden and rare flower areas. Learn how Xishuangbanna’s climate supports an extraordinary range of tropical plants from China and around the world.
After lunch, continue to Dai Ethnic Park.
In the afternoon, join the water-splashing celebration, one of the most joyful and memorable parts of Dai culture. Please bring spare clothes, sandals and a waterproof phone bag.
Return to Jinghong in the late afternoon.
Day 5: Manting Park & Elephant Feeding Experience – Departure
Xishuangbanna
After breakfast, check out from the hotel. You may leave your luggage at the hotel reception or keep it in the vehicle.
Visit Manting Park, one of Jinghong’s best-known historical parks, with tropical gardens, Dai-style architecture and peaceful walking paths.
Take part in a supervised elephant feeding experience. Feeding materials are paid separately on site.
