Small group cultural journey
About this Journey
Yunnan is one of China’s most geographically and culturally diverse regions.
Over eight days, this journey moves through landscapes that feel completely different from one another: Kunming’s limestone karst formations, Dali’s lakeside villages, Lijiang’s ancient trade routes and snow mountain views, and the Tibetan highlands of Shangri-La.

The route begins in Kunming, often called the “City of Eternal Spring.” From here, you explore the Stone Forest, a vast natural landscape shaped by wind and water over millions of years.
In Dali, the journey slows down beside Erhai Lake. The city has long been shaped by Bai culture, the Cangshan Mountains and trade routes linking southwest China with Tibet and Southeast Asia. You will visit lakeside viewpoints, Xizhou Village, the Three Pagodas and Dali Ancient Town.
From Dali, continue north through the mountains towards Shaxi Ancient Town. Shaxi was once an important stop along the Tea Horse Road, where merchants, horses, tea and goods moved between Yunnan, Tibet and beyond. Its old streets still carry traces of this trading history.

Lijiang introduces another side of Yunnan: Naxi culture, mountain waterways, traditional architecture and the dramatic presence of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. At Glacier Park and Blue Moon Valley, the landscape shifts again—from ancient town streets to high-altitude snow peaks.

The final part of the journey enters Shangri-La, where Tibetan Buddhist culture, open grasslands, monasteries and prayer wheels create a different rhythm of travel. You will visit Tiger Leaping Gorge, Dukezong Ancient Town, Ganden Sumtseling Monastery and Napa Lake before returning to Kunming.
This is a route for travelers who want to see Yunnan in layers: ancient towns, local cultures, mountain roads, sacred landscapes and some of the province’s most unforgettable natural scenery.

Itinerary
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Shangri-La – Niru Village – Colorful Waterfalls
Shangri-La
Meet your guide in the morning at the East Gate of Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-La.
Drive towards Niru Village, a remote Tibetan settlement surrounded by forested mountains and river valleys. After arriving, begin the afternoon hike along the river canyon towards the Colorful Waterfalls.
The waterfall system flows over a broad travertine formation, creating layered cascades that can produce rainbow-like colours in clear sunlight. After time to rest and take photos, hike back to Niru Village by the same route.
Check in to a local guesthouse and enjoy a quiet evening in the village.
Day 2: Niru Village – Sele Lake – Nanbao Pasture – Niru Village
Niru Village
After breakfast, begin the main trekking day of the journey.
Follow the Niru River through sections of old forest before climbing towards Sele Lake. The route gradually gains altitude and crosses a mountain pass at around 3,900m.
Sele Lake is often translated as “Golden Pasture” in Tibetan. After a rest by the lake, continue towards Nanbao Pasture, a high alpine grassland surrounded by mountain slopes, clear water and wide-open views.
At around 4,100m, Nanbao Pasture is the highest point of the route. On clear days, you may see yaks grazing across the grasslands beside Nanbao Lake.
After exploring the pasture, return to Niru Village.
Day 3: Niru Village – Shangri-La
Shangri-La
Enjoy breakfast in the village before departing around 09:00.
Drive back to Shangri-La, with expected arrival around 13:00 depending on road conditions.
We recommend booking onward flights, trains or long-distance transport for the following day whenever possible, especially during the rainy season or holiday periods.
