Yubeng Hiking Tour

Yubeng is located at the foot of Meili Snow Mountain in Deqin County, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Currently inaccessible by road, it requires a 16km hike to enter. Divided into Upper Yubeng and Lower Yubeng, the village nestles beneath the peak of Meili Snow Mountain, boasting stunning scenery and simple folk customs.

Small group cultural journey

About this Journey

YYubeng is more than a remote mountain village. It is a place shaped by snow peaks, pilgrimage routes, Tibetan mountain culture and the long rhythm of life in the Hengduan Mountains.

The journey begins in Shangri-La and gradually moves north through the deep valleys of northwest Yunnan. You pass the Jinsha River, cross high mountain roads and approach the Meili Snow Mountain range—known locally as Kawagarbo. For many Tibetan communities, these peaks are not simply dramatic scenery. They are sacred presences, woven into local belief, seasonal life and generations of mountain travel.

Yunnan travel scene

By the time you reach the Yubeng trailhead, the road journey is over. From here, the landscape changes completely. The final approach is on foot, following mountain paths into a hidden valley beneath the snow mountains. The pace slows down. The air becomes thinner. Forests, waterfalls, rivers and high ridgelines replace the towns and highways left behind.

Yubeng itself sits deep within this mountain world. The village is surrounded by steep slopes, alpine forests and the towering peaks of the Meili range. Life here has always been shaped by altitude, weather and distance. Local guesthouses, cultivated fields, Tibetan-style homes and prayer flags are reminders that this is not an empty wilderness, but a living mountain community.

The trekking routes from Yubeng lead towards two of the area’s most meaningful natural landmarks. Ice Lake lies high beneath the snow peaks, reached through forests, rhododendron slopes and exposed alpine terrain. The Sacred Waterfall, known locally as Shenpu Waterfall, is deeply respected by Tibetan pilgrims and is often visited as a place of reflection and blessing.

This route does not attempt to “conquer” the mountain. Instead, it invites you to enter its lower world slowly: to hike through valleys, sleep in the village, walk beneath sacred peaks and experience the scale of Meili Snow Mountain from within the landscape rather than from a distant viewpoint.

It is a demanding journey, but also a rare one. For four days, you trade city comfort for mountain silence, earn every view on foot and experience one of northwest Yunnan’s most powerful landscapes with more time, more depth and more respect.

Itinerary

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Shangri-La → Jinsha River Grand Bend → Baima Snow Mountain → Meili Snow Mountain → Ninong Grand Canyon → Yubeng

Shangri-La

Feilai Temple View Hotel is the best spot to photograph Meili Snow Mountain. From here, you'll admire the sacred 13 Peaks of Meili, the leader of Tibet's eight holy mountains and one of the world's most beautiful snow-capped mountains. After viewing Meili Snow Mountain, drive across Lancang River Bridge for about 1 hour to reach Ninong Village or Xidang Village (hiking starting point) and begin the 14km hike to Yubeng.

Note: Bring essential clothing, medications, etc. Large bags/luggage can only be collected after exiting the village post-hike.

Day 2: Yubeng Ice Lake Trek

Yubeng

After breakfast, depart from accommodation. Hike through high-altitude primeval forests and rhododendron bushes for 2 hours, cross Shangnazong La Pass (3,900m), descend to the bottom of Yubeng River, and pass through primeval pine forests to reach Xiaonong Base Camp (3,800m). After a short rest, hike to Ice Lake (4,100m). Start returning around 14:00 and arrive back in Yubeng around 18:00.

Day 3: Shenpu Waterfall Trek

Yubeng

Shenbao Waterfall is located south of Kawakarpo Peak in Yunling Township, Deqin County. The waterfall pouring down from the cliff is regarded as "holy water" by Tibetans, who believe bathing in it purifies the soul. The waterfall's scenery varies by season: magnificent in rainy season with abundant water, and like silk ribbons in dry season. Pilgrims consider it sacred, and rainbows often form when sunlight shines through the spray. Start returning around 14:00 and arrive back in Yubeng around 18:00.

Day 4: Yubeng → Ninong Grand Canyon → Shangri-La

Shangri-La

After breakfast, pack luggage and hike out of Yubeng via Ninong Grand Canyon to return to Shangri-La. Arrive around 17:00, concluding the pleasant hiking tour.
